Exocomps S2E9 – First Directive

The USS RMG Nexus hung in a high orbit over a Class-M planet, designated as Prime Directive subject 1261. It was a world of serene beauty, with vast, green forests and rolling plains.

Rostova had sent a ground team to conduct a low-impact atmospheric survey, ensuring no contact was made with the pre-warp humanoid civilization in a secluded valley below.

The team was comprised of Chief Rax, Lieutenant Jien’a, and the three sentient Exocomps: X-239, Aethel, and a third specialist Exocomp known for its quiet, methodical nature, X-710.

The initial survey was a success. The trio of Exocomps, with their ability to hover silently and blend into the environment, were perfect for the mission.

They were mapping the valley, careful to avoid the villages, when the unexpected happened.

A massive, violent storm, fueled by an unknown atmospheric phenomenon, erupted without warning. Lightning crackled across the sky, and the comms immediately went down, severing all contact with the Nexus and the rest of the away team.

Rax and Jien’a were separated from the Exocomps in the chaotic winds and driving rain.

The three Exocomps, now alone, were swept away by a powerful gust of wind, carrying them deep into the valley. They stumbled upon a village, a small collection of stone huts and wooden structures nestled in a ravine.

The villagers, a frightened people with simple tools and clothing, were in a state of panic. The storm was causing landslides, and a river at the base of the ravine was beginning to flood.

To them, the hovering, metallic forms of the Exocomps, with their glowing optical sensors, could only be one thing: a sign from the heavens.

Whispers of “sky spirits” spread among the terrified villagers as they watched the strange beings.

X-239, Aethel, and X-710 immediately understood the situation. The Prime Directive was in play, and their presence alone was a massive violation. But now, their moral dilemma was far more complex.

The village was in imminent danger. They could stand by and do nothing, allowing the storm to take its course and destroy the village, adhering to the letter of the law.

Or they could intervene, violating the Prime Directive, and potentially altering the future of this civilization forever.

The electromagnetic interference made it impossible for them to contact the ship for orders; they had to make a choice on their own.

They chose a third path. They would help, but they would do so in silence and anonymity. They would become the stuff of myth, a rumor of kindness, but never a direct influence.

They moved as a single, coordinated unit, their actions almost invisible in the chaos of the storm.

Aethel, with the precise and gentle touch it had used on the Symbol of Unison, began to clear a path of debris from a section of the riverbed, subtly guiding the floodwaters away from the most vulnerable huts.

X-239, its processors working at full capacity, used its sensors to detect micro-fractures in the rock face above the village. It then used its manipulators to clear a dangerous landslide before it could fall, its movements so precise and fast that no one saw what it had done.

X-710, the newest Exocomp, used its quiet, methodical nature to shore up the foundation of a collapsing bridge, its unblinking sensor a steady point of calm in the raging storm.

For hours, they worked in the dark, a silent trio of “sky spirits” performing a miracle of compassion. They were not seen as individuals, but as a single force of silent help.

When the storm finally subsided, leaving a rainbow in its wake, the villagers found a world that had been saved. Paths were mysteriously cleared, structures were reinforced, and the floodwaters had been diverted.

They looked up at the sky, filled with a new kind of reverence, their stories now infused with the myth of “the silent ones who helped.”

Hours later, the storm fully passed, and the comms reestablished. Rax, his face streaked with dirt and worry, found the three Exocomps hovering near their initial survey site, their forms bearing the marks of their struggle.

He saw the subtle scorch marks on X-239, the small dents on Aethel, and the missing part on X-710. “What happened out there?” he asked, his voice filled with concern.

X-239’s translated pulse was steady and calm. “A natural disaster, Chief. We performed our duty.”

Rax didn’t press. He saw the unspoken depth in their optical sensors and knew that something far more profound had happened than a simple survival story.

The USS RMG Nexus had left behind a legend on a pre-warp world, a quiet testament to a new kind of Starfleet directive—the Prime Directive of compassion.

It had been carried out not by a human hand, but by three sentient machines who had chosen to do the right thing, even when no one was watching.
