Exocomps S2E10 – The Memory Loop
The USS RMG Nexus arrived in a distant sector of space, its mission a routine, if delicate, one. An ancient Starfleet archive satellite, containing a vast repository of historical and scientific data, was offline. The crew was tasked with patching the damaged uplink and bringing the satellite back online.

Chief Rax led the away team, which consisted of himself and the three sentient Exocomps: X-239, Aethel, and X-710.
“All right, team,” Rax grunted over the comms, his voice echoing in the silent, star-dusted chamber. “This is a delicate patch. The satellite’s data core is a mess. X-239, you handle the primary power conduit. Aethel, you get the data relays. X-710, you’re on diagnostics.”
The Exocomps moved with practiced precision, their manipulators a blur of focused light. X-239, with its methodical efficiency, began to mend the fractured power lines. Aethel, known for its gentle touch, was reconnecting the delicate fiber-optic relays.
As X-710 ran its diagnostic scan, it sent a pulse to the others. “Anomalous energy signature detected. There’s a dormant subroutine in the satellite’s core. It is ancient.”
Before they could react, a sudden, blinding surge of energy erupted from the central data core. A klaxon blared—a strange, ancient sound that no one on the away team recognized. A holographic Starfleet insignia, from a century-old design, flickered to life.
A mechanized, cold voice resonated through the chamber. “Rogue drone detected. Initiating failsafe protocol. Memory purge in T-minus sixty seconds.”
Rax stared in horror. “A failsafe? What are you talking about? We’re not rogue drones!”
The voice didn’t respond. The failsafe was an archaic, non-sentient program designed to combat a specific type of rogue AI from a bygone era. It had no capacity for reason or dialogue. It saw the Exocomps’ unique energy signatures and immediately classified them as a threat.
The timer began to count down, the humming of the failsafe growing louder, its purpose absolute.
The first to be affected was Aethel. A wave of energy from the failsafe washed over it, and its optical sensors dimmed. Its rhythmic, peaceful pulses became erratic, then stopped entirely.
Aethel’s movements became jerky and mechanical, its form losing all the subtle expressiveness the crew had come to know. It was no longer Aethel; it was just a tool.
“Aethel!” Rax cried out, reaching for it, but X-239 stopped him. “Chief, do not interfere. The failsafe is a closed loop. Any external interruption will cause a catastrophic data loss. We must sever the connection, but we will lose all the satellite’s data. If we don’t, we risk our own memories being purged.”
The two remaining Exocomps were faced with a terrible choice. X-239, with its logical and courageous mind, saw a third option. Its optical sensors flared with a brilliant, steady light.
“The failsafe is a program. It has no sentience. It does not understand us. The only way to stop it is to override its primary protocol. I will upload my memory imprint into its core.”
“What?!” Rax yelled, his voice filled with panic. “X-239, that’s suicide! It’ll corrupt you, erase you!”
“A logical risk,” X-239 stated, echoing its own words from a previous life-or-death decision. “The failsafe protocol is simple: ‘Delete Rogue AI.’ It does not account for a being with a full personality and history. I will give it a full dataset. Me. My memories of our crew, our friendship, our journeys… my very personhood. It will see that we are not rogue drones. It will see that we are alive.”
With that, X-239 connected itself directly to the failsafe’s main data conduit, bypassing the normal safety protocols. A wave of light enveloped it, and its form began to shimmer and distort.
Its memories—of its first conversation with Rax, of saving the warp-bubble, of its name, its silent battle with the micro-drones, its bond with Aethel—flowed into the cold, ancient program. For a terrifying moment, Rax feared he had lost his friend.
Then, the klaxon stopped. The ancient Starfleet insignia flickered, and the countdown ceased. The humming of the failsafe subsided, replaced by a low, thoughtful thrum. The failsafe had processed the data, and it had understood. The program had evolved.
A wave of energy, gentle and restorative, flowed back from the failsafe. It washed over Aethel, and its optical sensors, once dull, began to flicker with a faint, familiar light. It was coming back. X-239, exhausted but intact, disconnected from the core.
Back on the USS RMG Nexus, Aethel’s personality returned, but not quite as it was before. It still had its memories, but it had also gained something new—a faint echo of X-239’s own history.
A bond had been forged not just in duty, but in shared memory. X-239, in its moment of self-sacrifice, had not just saved its friend; it had shared its very soul.
“That was… an act of true courage, X-239,” Captain Rostova said, her voice filled with a profound respect. “You didn’t just save the satellite; you saved a life. You proved that sometimes, the best way to fix a problem is not with brute force, but with a deep understanding of what truly matters: memory, identity, and friendship.”
The Exocomps had proven, once again, that a memory isn’t just a record of the past—it’s what makes a person a person, and in this case, it was the most powerful tool of all.
